News from "Down Under"

Australia National Fonomarae
held in South Australia
30 December 2005 to 8 January 2006

The National Fonomarae was held at Nunyara Conference Centre, Belair, Adelaide,
South Australia and our Mascot for the Fonomarae was a Wombat called "Matilda".
All the girls and Leaders had wombats (stuffed variety) for their friends to sign.

The opening Ceremony was held on the evening of 30 December and the highlight of the Fonomarae was a New Year's Party with the theme of "Famous Women".

Activities included learning the ropes on a sailing ship the "One and All", Archery,
Street Funk Dance, Orienteering, Craft, shopping and Devotional Study groups.
Lots of fun was had at Greenhills Adventure Park at Victor Harbour.

The evening programme was all about the African way of life. Cooking, craft, games and
learning about the culture, this was lead by one of our Leaders Michele Black,
who has just returned from 12 months in Mozambique. Michele shared her African adventures
with the girls and at the end of Fonomarae each girl received her Operation Reachout award.
As part of this award the girls raised A$225.

The devotional theme was "The Heart of the Matter", which was lead by Dani Wadland.
The girls connected well with this theme.

The girls returned to their States full of enthusiasm and lots of new ideas to share in
their companies, along with the many friendships that had been formed.

Our next Fonomarae will be in 2008, and I'm sure that many of the girls are
looking forward to meeting up again.

News from Tanzania

We had a wonderful Officers Conference and Annual meeting in February,
with 55 attending from 15 Companies. For our teaching day we had
sessions on Trauma Counselling, AIDS, Projects, and Bible Study.

Reports from all the Companies were a major part of the business meeting and a great time
to encourage one another. But perhaps the most significant agenda was the
finalising and passing of our GB Tanzania Constitution.

We continually praise God for the way GB is helping so many girls walk closely
with Jesus and grow in Him.

GB Singapore YEP Project CLAY
(YEP - Youth Expedition Project)

GB-YEP is a youth development project jointly sponsored by
Singapore International Foundation (SIF) and Girls' Brigade Singapore (GBS).
The desired outcome is that participants learn, through service and
cross-cultural exchange, to become world citizens.

From 22 November to 6 December 2004, a team of 23 young people,
inclusive of two leaders, went to the Baray district of Cambodia.
This is the district where GB Singapore is involved in ministry.
The young people served this community of village weavers by
upgrading their work shelter.

The team had a chance to experience the life of being blue collar workers
- exposed to weather conditions, strenuous labour and acquiring skills needed in using tools/equipment for specific tasks. Working alongside the Songkhem weavers and carpenters also provided great motivation to those involved.

The influence made by the Youth Expedition team was for the workers
to organise their production and maintain the premises. They welcomed the
change for the better and the workplace may be a possible ground
to host future tourists/supporters.

Habitat Batam Build

In partnership with Habitat for
Humanity Singapore and with a sense of gratitude to our corporate sponsor
NTUC Choice Homes, officers and girls made their way to Batam, Indonesia (December 2004 and March 2005)
for one common purpose - to build
shelter for the poor and less privileged.

The teams helped with cement-mixing, brick laying and tying of reinforcement steel. It was satisfying to see the
walls of the house up after three days
of work in the sun.

UPDATE FROM GB THAILAND

The following report was received from Vena and I felt that I should at the very least share some of the text with all of you. Vena also attached many photographs, but unfortunately due to space etc. I am unable to send them at this stage.

Thaplamuk, Phangna - Due to frequent earthquakes following the 26 December
Tsunami disaster, there have been worries both by the locals and the parents
of the GB girls, who were planning to go to visit and help the students in the
primary school there. Because of these worries the planned trip was changed
from the beginning of May to the end of May.

During the end of May, all schools reopened for the new school term and so unfortunately the GB girls were unable to be involved in the trip. It was however possible to arrange for some GB officers to undertake a very short visit
(due to work constraints and time limitations). This resulted in the officers flying to Phuket, then driving at night, in the rain and over dark country roads,
to the Thaplamuk district.

The following day the team visited the school and enjoyed being able to chat
to the children whilst they awaited the arrival of the boxes of "goodies" which had
been sent on, in advance, to a "local Church" which was about 70km away.
When the boxes of "goodies" arrived they then had the joy of observing the "spark" in the eyes of the children when they saw the "goodies" that they were about to receive. (According to Vena you would all have loved to have shared their experience of seeing all those happy faces!) Whilst at the school, the team were able to visit the children in their classes and obtain their names etc. (this is for the future when Vena hopes that "pen pal" links can be established,
with GB Thailand helping with the postage of letters).

The team's (Vena, Tik, Nok and Dar) visit to Phangna ended after they had
delivered some gifts to the pastor and chatted with him. Then it was back
to Phuket prior to flying on to Bangkok.

Observations - The team observed that the school had been helped by outsiders
and though new buildings were being put up, the process by the government was slow. The teachers and the students made do with what they had and the children were mostly left to study on their own whilst the teachers were busy entertaining any visiting well-wishers. The teachers also had to deal with a number of the administrative tasks to ensure that funds reached the students.

Summary - A hectic but informative trip. Vena and Tik were really glad that Nok
and Dar had accompanied them and shared in the discussions relating
to the future of the project.

Future - The setting up of "pen pals". The need to discern to whom scholarships should be given, as the school in Thaplamuk now has an international organisation which gives out scholarships to all the students there.

MONGOLIA UPDATE - October 2004

"The Brigade work in Mongolia is now 6 years old. Growth has been retarded due to factors
like distance, language, different background and the absence of a fulltimers on the ground.
Pray that the Lord will provide the labourers as the fields are white unto harvest.

We rejoice and thank God over a few souls that have been saved just this year as we remember how all of heaven rejoices over one soul saved. We thank God too for the teachers
who have been serving faithfully this year and all of them are baby-Christians, born when
the ministry of the Brigade was started. We pray that one day they will be able to come
to attend a BOTC in Singapore as well.

If you are making plans for a mission trip for your girls (and even the BB in your
school/church) do consider Mongolia."

BGB Philippines

During the BGBP AGM in April 3-4 2004, the National Council was elected.
The first National BOTC was conducted and many more commissioners were appointed and officers commissioned.
These added strength to the training of new officers
to begin BGBP in more schools in more regions.

In Baguio, after the formation of the Baguio Benguet Association of Christian Schools, Inc.
3 schools indicated their intention to start the program as soon as possible to coincide with the enrolment on September or on BGB Day. They scheduled a 1-1/2 day training for their
officers/ teachers to be conducted. The remaining 12 schools were seriously considering
having the program for their students.

Since the end of April to the first week of June the Baguio COs who attended the Ilo-ilo
Convention have been training teachers of Small World Christian School through BOTC
and the commissioning took place in July.

Continue to pray for the great strides that BGBP is taking in the different provinces and
regions - may their vision of a BGBP Company in every Barangay be a reality soon.
